Exaggeration is commonplace in the luxury vehicle niche, but there are still manufacturers offering models at fair prices, such as Acura with the RDX. Its SUV lacks nothing and doesn't cost an arm and a leg either. It's a model that has everything to please and boasts an excellent reputation that precedes it. Acura could have easily taken advantage and inflated the prices or offered ridiculously expensive option packages, but it didn't, which is to its credit.
The Japanese manufacturer's SUV doesn't introduce any major novelties for 2024. That's not really an issue since it's not trying to be as competitive as some of its rivals. This is precisely why we admire the RDX. It's a luxury model with great humility and simplicity that others can only envy. In short, the Acura RDX is a true benchmark in its category.
Range and Prices
The 2024 Acura RDX lineup consists of only three versions. The TECH model serves as the base version with a starting price of $56,840. Next is the very popular A-Spec version at $59,140. Lastly, it's the Platinum Elite A-Spec version that sits at the top of the range with a starting price of $64,140. To be honest with you, if you're considering leaving the Honda CR-V for a more luxurious model, it's better to opt for the A-Spec or the Platinum Elite A-Spec directly.
Category and Competition
The Acura RDX operates in one of the most competitive segments in the market, namely the compact luxury SUV segment. On paper, the Japanese manufacturer's SUV doesn't have much to defend itself, but it's a different story in reality. Let's just say that Acura has done things well, as always.
Rivals: Alfa Romeo Stelvio, Audi Q5, BMW X3, BMW X4, Buick Envision, Cadillac XT5, Genesis GV70, Infiniti QX50, Infinity QX55, Jaguar F-Pace, Land Rover Discovery Sport, Range Rover Evoque, Lexus NX, Lincoln Corsair, Maserati Grecale, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Porsche Macan, Volvo XC60
Design and Technologies
The brand's aesthetic signature is immediately recognizable, especially in the front face of the RDX. The RDX displays a certain character, and I must say I really like the model's grille. It gives the impression of speeding through the stars. Moreover, this sensation is also reflected in the multimedia system animation when changing the driving mode, which is quite amusing. Otherwise, wherever you look, the RDX is marked by unique design elements, whether it's about its C-shaped rear lights or its dynamic sideline. In short, you'll have understood that I really like the exterior design of the model.
Unfortunately, I can't say the same about the interior. The dashboard of the RDX is starting to feel dated, and there's a design aspect that I find particularly irritating. It's about the buttons used to put the vehicle in reverse or drive. The touchpad also requires some adaptation time. Fortunately, the Japanese manufacturer's SUV makes up for it in terms of comfort. Additionally, its cargo space is impressive. It's a particularly interesting model for families.
Regarding the other technologies offered by the Japanese manufacturer's SUV, they work very well, especially concerning safety technologies. The adaptive cruise control is very precise.
Performance
The 2024 Acura RDX offers only one mechanical option, a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. It delivers 272 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. This is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission that powers all four wheels. Acura claims an average consumption of 11.0 L/100 km in the city and 8.6 L/100 km on the highway, which is certainly within a good average range.
This engine is versatile and very enjoyable. The RDX's driving is predictable, and its ride comfort is impressive. Although the Japanese manufacturer's SUV doesn't offer performance versions, the 2.0-liter engine is capable of providing thrilling sensations. Balance is the key here, and I believe Acura hit the mark with the RDX. While it may not offer as much diversity as most of its rivals, it remains interesting nonetheless. I had a lot of fun behind the wheel of the RDX, and I'm quite picky in that regard. Its all-wheel drive is also highly efficient.
Weaknesses
I'm not a big fan of the touchpad or the buttons for shifting into reverse or drive. Additionally, there's clearly a missing mechanical option for the RDX. A performance version or an electrified version would be welcome.
Strengths
The Acura RDX is a vehicle that has proven its reliability and durability over the years. The quality of the finish is impressive, not to mention its quiet ride. It's a model that generally retains excellent resale value. The Acura RDX is also relatively affordable considering what it offers.
Signature Element
There's no secret here; Acura has focused on balance, quality/price ratio, and the model's good reputation. That's why the RDX stands among the most compelling models in its category.
Closing Thoughts
The Acura RDX is one of those rare vehicles you can buy without too much hesitation. It's a model that buyers generally appreciate, and for good reason. The Japanese manufacturer's SUV has many qualities and very few shortcomings. It's a model that has everything to please and lacks nothing in terms of equipment. Hence, you'll understand why the Acura RDX ranks among the models I recommend the most in its category.
